Over the past few months I have been working with our local museum that has just had a fantastic face lift. It is situated in Western Park, which was also the Venue for many years of the Whitt Sings. The church leaders had already spoken about inviting him to come to the church to do a ‘Swot’ analysis - to help them find the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats which the church enjoyed and faced. However, that had been put on hold when I arrived as the minister in September.

An opportunity had opened up for Andy and for us. He got the bed, and we decided that while he was with us he could meet up with the leaders in an informal way. This is something you could do - let me share with you what happened.

I invited all the church leaders round to our home, no agenda was set, just coffee, relax with one another and listen to what Andy had to say. It was not preaching, not ‘do this, don’t do that’, certainly no guarantee of a ‘magic wand’ and all would be well. Andy simply shared what was on his heart concerning mission, and gave some practical examples of things we could consider when doing outreach. And that was it!

Or was it? Twice during the following week people spoke to me about things which I realised had come out of our time together. Things which Andy mentioned almost in passing have certainly made me think and re-assess how I do things. I think that the leaders were motivated, and should hopefully continue to grow as a team together.

And all because Andy needed a bed for the night! I would urge you to look for ways in which you could invite him to speak with your church or leaders. It does not have to be a formal meeting; invite Andy, invite others round, put the kettle on and see where God takes you.

The Church in the High Street

Mention the High Street Church and many people will know that you are speaking about the one in Rushden. Back in December, it became literally the church in the High Street.

The town held a Christmas Market on the first Sunday in December. Various stalls, fairground rides, street entertainment, Salvation Army band playing carols, switching on the Christmas lights and the fast becoming renowned Christmas Pudding race! And all right outside our doors.

Of course, these kind of events which are so often held on Sundays do put us in a little of a dilemma. We may not be in agreement with Sunday trading and other things which are happening - but these things are here and I feel they are here to stay. So that leaves us with two alternatives: either hiding away in the church or playing a part in bringing to people’s notice why the celebrations are being held, showing them some love in action and really being ‘the church in the High Street’. We chose the latter.

We were given a stall, but soon realised that it was much better to be in amongst the people. We gave out leaflets, Christian booklets, colouring sheets for children and around 400 free cups of coffee and tea. Quite a few people wanted to have a look at the church. Some had not realised it was there, many had never been in. And yes, we even entered a team in the Christmas Pudding race (an obstacle race involving wheelbarrows, runners and Christmas Puddings).

More people know where we are now. Hopefully many will have read the literature we gave out. We will never know what influence we have had on people. I am certain that all those from the church who braved the cold on that day to be among the people felt that it was very worthwhile. It wasn’t easy, it wasn’t comfortable on a cold day. But it was where God wanted us to be.

The WRU DOChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15554074108694430669noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28029466.post-893246887212536612007-03-19T04:45:00.000-07:002007-03-19T08:22:03.754-07:00December 06 - Update

Christmas Day 4:45am Pippa (aged 4) burst into our room "Daddy! He had just struck a deal to sell it for $139m (£74m). While he was talking. Mr Wynn waved his arm and accidentally struck the painting with his elbow. Nora Ephron was in the office at the time and recorded on her blog "There was a terrible noise. Smack in the middle....was a black hole the size of a silver dollar. 'Look what I've done' he said. 'Thank goodness it was me'". He subsequently pulled out of the deal.

Check out the whole story here :- http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/6061140.stm

Mr Wynn said he would now keep the painting for himself and have it repaired. He had bought it in 2004 for $104.1m (a record for art sold at auction).

One small action, One small hole, and its worth nothing. $139m gone! Although repaired, it will never be worth anything near that price, torn for life. Much the same as Sin! Yet God has worked a way through dying in our place with our sin tearing Him instead of us. He can more than repair us, He can renew us in His likeness, and so we can be worth more than the original ever was. Consider the price tag for this - Jesus Life - Gods' Son.

The WRU DOChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15554074108694430669noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28029466.post-1161003753460278332006-10-16T05:55:00.000-07:002006-10-16T12:38:08.413-07:00
Intimacy, Food and Fellowship
8th Oct 06 - Hazlemere Church - High Wycombe
It was great to have Anne-Marie and the girls with me on this visit. Thank you to Michael and Elizabeth for the hospitality.

I took the morning service and then we stayed for lunch with the church so I could get to know everyone better. They regularly do this as a church anyway.

A Need for Intimacy - John 17:20-26 - preached at the morning service

Intimacy - Hijacked by society

Unfortunately to society "Intimacy" has one level - 'Sexual'. The bible puts the Intimacy of Sex at the end of a journey called marriage. The couple get to "KNOW" each other as friends through a pure courtship and engagement, and after making promises before God and church for the rest of their lives they "KNOW" each other physically. Society though removes this journey of knowledge and places Sex 'wrongly' at the beginning. One person I spoke to years ago, felt it was immoral to marry someone before sleeping with them, because you did not really know(?) them until you had slept with them. How sad! Its not until we know that one person intimately, and are secure within a life long commitment , do we then and only then express our love for them, in the intimacy of a sexual relationship. Compare the "Wonder" of Proverbs 30:19 with the shallow, matter of fact, self-centeredness of v20.

Intimacy - The Friendship Within

In John 17 Jesus prays for the Church to have intimacy with Himself and with His Father. This is prayed just before He is arrested, and we see His hearts desire for His people. Do we know what this True Love means? When we think of love we think of caring for each other, but its a lot more than that. Intimacy is putting yourselves in a vulnerable position with one another, trusting the other person will be gentle with you as you share your deepest fear, weakest failing, guilt and sins, maybe a bereavement or even a prayer time. We can never force this type of intimacy within a church, by telling everyone to hug each other etc. NO WAY! But do we hinder it, because there is a culture of gossiping, pride, judgmentalism or being too busy to listen to each other. One of the best ways of enabling someone to open up, is if we first of all entrust them with our weaknesses and fears.

Intimacy - Friendship Outwardly

So what has this got to do with outreach? Everything! For starters Jesus said "they will know you are my disciples by your love one for another", but more importantly, one of the most intimate conversations you can ever have with someone is leading them to Christ. If you're not used to being intimate with believers then how can you hope to have this level of intimacy with someone seeking Jesus. Does intimacy frighten you? Get practicing within the church by loving one another in true friendship. How well do people outside of the church know you? Have you ever asked them for help or confided in them? If not then they will never understand how knowing Jesus helps you with our failings, fears and doubts? Do they know you well enough to confide their deepest fears or guilt with you? Are you non-judgmental, humble and gentle enough to handle their vulnerabilities.

Wow! just posted my blog and then checked out a mates blog, and he had just wrote on the same subject today as well. Check it out! Far better than mine as he gives a working example in the last few days!!!!
http://thecrowdedhouse.blogspot.com/2006/10/in-evangelism-training-with-new.html

The WRU DOChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15554074108694430669noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28029466.post-1160394465713837642006-10-09T04:40:00.000-07:002006-10-09T04:47:45.723-07:00Apologies for not updating this – I know a lot of people have been taking a look and seeing no change. Well thank you Gill from Arnold for giving me a prompt on Saturday – So here’s an update on some of the things I’ve been doing. I must get into the habbit.

Arnold - Nottingham Sunday 20th August
Arnold is a lovely fellowship, I visited back in August, they are wanting to explore the opportunities in their area. I took their evening service so I could get to know them and they could also get to know me. I noticed a number of their people live very close to the church and walk to the evening service. I feel this is a great strength. The next stage is maybe doing a SWAT analysis with them on the Church and local area. Watch this space!

Wolverhampton Sunday 10th September
On the Sunday before, John Griffiths had suffered a Heart Attack and only came out of Hospital on the Friday, but he was there at 3pm to open up for the Sunday school (which I took) John told us how three of the nurses at the hospital had all been through his Sunday school in years gone by. We had a great time with the three teenagers looking at the book of Judges and our hope in Heaven. We then had a lovely meal with some of the church and followed by an evening service that I took.

Rotherham, Mexborough and Doncaster Circuit
Tuesday 26th September evening Circuit meeting
This is what Circuit Business is all about, and the most useful Circuit meeting I have ever attended. Because it was “Church Centred”. Although I had come from the Union, and it was a Circuit meeting, we were looking the subject of outreach through the Local Church.
I see this as the overriding purpose of Church House, the Union and Circuits, to enable our local churches to effectively reach people with the Gospel. After all the Local Church Fellowship is only part of the WRU that is Eternal, and has a direct scriptural mandate for evangelism from our one only "Head" Jesus Christ. The Union and Circuit is there purely to support in this work. Thank you for hosting the event, and I was so encouraging to see so many taking an interest.

The Pastures (High Wycombe)– Saturday 30th October & Sunday 1st September
What a great weekend – Left Sheffield at 6am – Arrived at The Pastures at 9am, without my change of clothes for Sunday. I met with over 30 people from the church to do a SWOT analyse. This was very encouraging for me to see the Church, honestly grappling with their observations of themselves as God people. I then spent the afternoon with David and Margaret praying over the issues raised and then in the evening I met with the leadership team. They see this as the beginning of an ongoing process, and I felt there is a real desire to see things happen in their area. I then took the morning service, looking at “Societies Substitute saviours” and how they replace Jesus with lots of temporary saviours such as Alcohol, Borrowing, Moving house, Changing Relationships, etc.

The WRU DOChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15554074108694430669noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28029466.post-1153840122244064482006-07-25T07:47:00.000-07:002006-08-29T09:22:33.933-07:00Phil in a Grass Skirt! & BBQ's before Prayers!

Life is full of boxes! We are moving house on Tue 1st August! It was the first time they had tried something like this so not everything went smoothly - They couldn't find the key to the kitchen outside door for starters - then they realised they didn't have any pans! I liked the animal masks hiding in the grass on the notice board. Great use of a green paracute hanging from the ceiling. The challenge was to see how many pop-up animals you could get to stick down in 1 minute. The record was i think 7. We also found out in advance what the brides mothers hat will look like on Saturday, but we are not telling. Do pray for the team this week and the kids, Club finnishes on Thursday.

The WRU DOChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15554074108694430669noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28029466.post-1151906134740656032006-07-02T22:27:00.000-07:002006-07-25T15:33:15.310-07:00Its been a while since my last entree.
Last week we attended the WRU conference. It was a great blessing to us and a good opportunity to chat with many leaders about their own church situations.

Conversation on the Work of God (Phil Hearson)
"Battering down the hatches?"
This was one of the many highlights of the conference and a real challenge.
Phil looked at the opposition Christianity is facing. Direct from atheists, and indirect such as debt & gambling, family breakup, moral decline etc. These last ones might not (but can) effect Christian themselves, but we certainly feel the effect as we pick up the pieces, counsel the broken hearted, and witness loved ones hurting.
A verse I would quote at this point is..........
Php 3:10 "that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death,

Someone else in the conversation spoke about a ship going into battle, "Battering down the hatches" and with all guns blazing sped into the middle of the battle.

Phil's message was that this is our calling, not to shy away or hide, but to proactivly roll up our sleeves and get involved. With our eyes on Jesus and the love of Jesus in our hearts

Another speaker on the conference spoke of getting right into the situation, and experiencing/sharing the plight of those we are ministering to.

I'll leave the final word with William Booth, which sums up what it all means

While women weep, as they do now, I'll fight;
while little children go hungry, as they do now, I'll fight;
while men go to prison, in and out, in and out, as they do now, I'll fight;
while there is a drunkard left,
while there is a poor lost girl upon the streets,
while there remains one dark soul without the light of God,
I'll fight-I'll fight to the very end!

The WRU DOChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15554074108694430669noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28029466.post-1149967634552565002006-06-10T12:12:00.000-07:002006-06-10T12:29:48.520-07:00Chip Butties, The Anglican Church and Large Screen Football.

It was great!
12 - 1pm Football on the Ponderosa (Local Park) - loads of kids
1pm - 2pm Free chip putties served in the local Anglican Church
2pm onwards The 1st England Match Live on their large sceen in the church

The front of the church was draped in St Georges flags

3 large DJEMBE drums where past between kids and adults , to encourage the chanting and banged loudly throughout the match

What an ace time, loads of kids and families, noise.

Pitty such a boring game! We've looked at Solomon & Jesus, so tomorrow our focus is Heaven.

Our possible house move is as stressful as ever. We are in the last straight, and surprises keep on popping up. I am sure God has all things in hand. It will be just so great to be living in the local area of our church and kids school.

Whit Sing 4th June
Next Sunday afternoon, I'm speaking at a local Whit Sing (Inter-Church Gathering). They used to be quite an event in Sheffield's past, this picture take in the late 18 hundreds at Norfolk park. We now meet in a local church.

The WRU DOChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15554074108694430669noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28029466.post-1148323864233531362006-05-22T11:30:00.000-07:002006-05-22T11:55:04.300-07:00Being rudely woken after midnight is not a good experience, but last night was the exception. Our four year old daughter was having a nightmare. She was very distressed and sobbing, and saying "It's not a dream, it's real!"

She could only say two other things "I don't want to go to another church, I want to stay at our Church!" over and over again. She had dreampt that mummy had told her we were moving churches. Which we are not.

In the morning I asked her what she liked about our church. She didn't mention the singing, stories, crafts, prayers or building. She just rattled off 4 or 5 names of people of all ages, oh and finally the biscuits!

I wonder what the difference is between "Church Attenders" and "Those Who Are Church". I know one thing it has nothing to do with; its being an 'official church member'. The prayers, teaching, singing and readings help mold us into the church we need to be, but they in themselves are not the church. It's us the people, sharing the grace we have received, with each other and beyond.

This is taken from Jesus prayer for all believers
John 17:26 .........in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them."
Jesus desire and prayer is that we have in us the LOVE that God had for Him! Wow, that is some quality of love, and only obtainable through grace received from God.

The WRU DOChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15554074108694430669noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28029466.post-1148278642284460762006-05-21T22:42:00.000-07:002006-05-21T23:20:47.420-07:00"Make people happier says Cameron"... is the heading of this BBC news item (Linked Below)
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/5003314.stm
At a Google conference ...he will outline the need to make people happier as well as wealthier..... (I have no church in mind by the way).
A high value of status exists within the group.
The Teenagers respect those with either a flash car and/or like a certain type of music
The women 30+ respect others according to the type of house and how well its kept
The men 30+ respect others according to job and education
The retired respect according to behaviour of children and how smart your turned out!

How eager would you feel about joining them, regardless of whether you are a Christian?
Jesus said "They will know you are my disciples by you love one for another".

I am concerned "church goers"**, allow such values to strangle the grace that has been given to them. Either they place a perceived status on someone else and feel they are unworthy to invite the person with the large house round for a meal at their flat. Or the one with the large house feels they could not enjoy an evening of uneducated conversation at the flat.

When Jesus said "by their love for each other". It was love that comes out of fellowship He was talking about, because He said "...they will know they are My disciples". Fellowship is sharing the Grace we have received from God through Christ, with eachother. Yet we strangle it by our "perceived" statuses of others and ourselves.
Further reading Luke 14:7-24
Luke 14:7-14 "Strangling grace by Presumption" - Pride
Luke 14:15-24 "Rejecting grace by Complacency" - Materialism

** By saying "church goers" - thats all they are, for a church is a community of people who know God personally and each other through Fellowship (see above). God is at the centre. Those discribed above do not know this fellowship, because they strangle the grace they have recived, or they have sadly never recieved it at all.

The WRU DOChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15554074108694430669noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28029466.post-1147683833442650732006-05-15T01:51:00.000-07:002006-05-15T02:35:34.656-07:00Prep for Sunday 21st May 06
I am looking to post each week what I am planning for in the coming week, and maybe report back later on what I have learnt.

10:45am @ Hampden View (where I am Pastor)
Speaking on Psalm 67 (2nd of 4 part series) Last Sunday we looked at Solomon's fulfillment of the Psalm (Let the nations be glad!), on Sunday we will look at Jesus fulfillment.
Task for the congregation - The Gospel writers make a point of highlighting Jesus encounters with none Jewish people; like the Ten Lepers Jesus healed, Luke points out the only one who returned to thank Him was "a Gentile". See how many others you can find? And maybe one's I don't mention on Sunday.

6:15pm @ Oughtibridge (Part of Sheffield Circuit)
Speaking on Luke 14:1-24 (Look out for a posting on this later in the week).
But the Subject is "Suppressing the effect of Grace" - Non-Proactive, Presumptuous & Complacent.
Oughtibridge church have a great heart for the Bible, Gospel and Outreach.
